How to manually update or reinstall the IBDR backup agent for Windows

Introduction

Whenever there is an update to the IBDR Appliance firmware an update to the backup agent will also be released. In order to take advantage of any new features released in the firmware update, and to address any major issues, it is strongly recommended to update the backup agent as well. Having an out-of-date version of the backup agent will prevent you from taking advantage of any newly released features or improvements.

The steps used to manually update the backup agent are the same steps you would take when reinstalling the backup agent.
It is strongly recommended to enable automatic updates for the backup agent on the IBDR Appliance Management Console. This can be done by navigating to the "Settings" tab, going to "Firmware update" and checking the box "Automatically update Windows Backup Agents". When this option is checked, backup agent updates will automatically be applied to the client whenever the firmware on the appliance is updated.

Prerequisites

  1. Access to the client machine.
  2. Windows user permissions to uninstall and install software.

Instructions

1) Stop the Infrascale Backup and Restore Agent (64-bit) service running on the client machine.

Services are an application type that runs in the background of Windows without a user interface. These services are normally managed automatically by Windows, but sometimes you may to manually stop, start, or restart a service.

You can manage these services by running Services (services.msc) via the run command (Windows key + R). Once inside services.msc, right click on a service and the following options will be available:

Start - Starts a currently stopped service. This will only be visible if the service is stopped.
Stop - Stops a currently running service. This will only be visible if the service is running.
Restart - Restarts a currently running service. This will only be visible if the service is running,
If one of the services is stuck in the Stopping state, a reboot of the client machine is recommended.

    2) Uninstall all related Infrascale software from the client via "Add/Remove Programs".
After uninstalling the software, confirm that the following folders were deleted. If they still exist, delete them manually:
    1. C:\Program Files\Infrascale
    2. C:\Program Files\RVX-Backup
    3. C:\Program Files (x86)\Infrascale
    4. C:\Program Files (x86)\RVX-Backup

    3) Download the backup agent installer from the appliance. This can be done by navigating to Settings › Tools › Downloads on the Appliance Management Console.

    4) Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
